Walking with Isaiah, Day 66: “Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? 2 For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” - Isaiah 66:1-2.
Where is God’s house? Where does Almighty God abide? Where is His place of rest?
Yes, our Loving Creator dwells in Heaven, where His throne is located. However, in this passage, Father is looking for a place on earth where He can abide and make “the place of my rest”.
King Solomon built our Father an exceeding magnifical house on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israel, the place where He chose for His Name to dwell (Deuteronomy 12:11); but He was rejected and the Glory, His Presence, departed (Ezekiel 9:3-4; 10:4, 18-19; 11:23) and that house was destroyed by the Babylonians.
(Consider the Glory making His departure a few days prior to His outpouring upon all flesh: Luke 24:49-51. But this is another study for another time.)
Zerubbabel built the Second Temple in the exact same location, on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, Israel, and the entire Temple Mount was later built up by King Herod. While this Temple was still standing, St. Stephen witnesses of Isaiah’s words just prior to his martydom:
“Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet, 49 Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest? 50 Hath not my hand made all these things?” - Acts 7:48-50.
St. Paul, who was present during Stephen’s testimony and stoning, later witnesses the same passage in Isaiah 66:
“God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;” - Acts 17:24.
Since Almighty God does not dwell in temples made with hands, where on the earth is He looking to make the “place of my rest”? He told us…
“…but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” - Isaiah 66:2.
Almighty God, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, is looking for a man (mankind: male and female: Genesis 1:27) to dwell in! He is looking for a man in which to make “the place of my rest”!
What kind of man is Almighty God looking for so that He can abide within him?
God is looking for a humble man. A man who is “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3), not puffed up within himself so that He can give him His inheritance. A man who humbles himself under the mighty hand of God (I Peter 5:6) so that He can exalt him. A man who has a reverential awe and respect for His Word. A man who believes Him and does what He says.
Jesus Christ, the Son of Man, was the first man after Adam’s fall in whom Almighty God made His abode; the Man whom God made the “place of my rest”. And because of Jesus’ sacrifice, we who believe Him are now made our Creator’s dwelling place! We are now made “the place of my rest”!
“And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.” - I John 4:16.
“And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.” - II Corinthians 6:16.
“To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” - Colossians 1:27.
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” - I Corinthians 3:16.
And if us being made Almighty God’s place of rest were not enough, He has already joined Himself to us, He has already made Himself one with us, right now, in each of our physical bodies!
“But he that is joined unto the Lord is one [spirit].” - I Corinthians 6:17.
“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.” - John 17:20-23.
And if being made one with our Creator, right now, in this time, in our physical bodies, were not enough, He has already exalted us and He has already made us to sit with Him, in the heavenlies, on His seat of authority, in Christ Jesus!
“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.” - Isaiah 57:15.
Where does God dwell, right now? “I dwell in the high and holy place.”
With whom does God dwell, right now? “With him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit.”
To whom was God looking to make “the place of my rest”? ““…but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” - Isaiah 66:2.
Therefore, where is him “that is of a contrite and humble spirit” dwelling, right now?
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” - Ephesians 2:4-6.
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” - Revelation 3:20-22.
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” - Revelation 3:22.
Do you hear what the Spirit is saying to you? Do you believe God’s Word?
“For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age,” - Hebrews 5:13-14.
Look. I know that what the Spirit is saying to the churches is not milk. I know that this is a huge chunk of meat. This is like a whole cow! I understand that this may be hard to receive. I sure wasn’t taught these Truths when I was growing up. I was fed skim milk for a long time. I get it.
Reading this extremely brief study is not enough, in and of itself, for many Christians to grasp these Truths. Let me encourage you to not just spit this out. Chew on these Truths. Meditate on these Truths. Seek God about these Truths and He shall bring you to a place of better understanding. God’s Word is Truth, whether or not we completely understand it. And He wills for us to understand it!
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:” - Ephesians 1:17. God does not will for us to be in the dark about His Glorious Truths!
It is time for us all to grow up. It is time for us all to come to understand and lay hold of and experience the “exceeding great and precious promises” which our Father has made unto us. (II Peter 1:1-4)
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” - II Corinthians 1:20.
It is time for the Bride to come to full maturity! For our Bridegroom, our Lord Jesus Christ, is soon returning!
“And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; 15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:” - Ephesians 4:11-15.
To God be the Glory!
